INTRO 3, Working with, and Editing, MIDI Regions [HOME]
In this activity, you'll be working with a GarageBand file called yankee_doodle_edit to practice the following edit functions:
Cut
Copy
Split
Paste
(optional) Join
Open the file, yankee_doodle_edit. Note that Track 1 is the melody to the familiar American folk tune, "Yankee Doodle." Track 2 is a chordal accompaniment. Track 3 is a bass line. Track 4 contains a 2-measure drum loop. Hit the PLAY button to playback the file. Observe the playhead as it sweeps along, showing the song position.
Each colored "bubble" is called a REGION. Loop the drum loop by pointing your mouse at the upper right of the drum loop region and click-hold-drag to the right. The loop repeats over and over as far as you drag it. Replicate the loop until the end of measure 10.
Select the flute track region (click on it). Choose Edit --> Copy. Place the playhead at the beginning of measure 11. Choose Edit --> Paste. The flute region copies to m. 11.
Do the same thing with the accompaniment and bass tracks. (NOTE: You can shift-click to copy more than one track at a time.)
Place the playhead at m. 17 and select the Flute, Accompaniment, and Bass tracks (shift-click, or click-hold-drag around). Choose Edit --> Split. Now click anywhere OUTSIDE these regions to UNSELECT them.
Now select the Flute, Accompaniment, and Bass regions of mm. 17-18. (We will be copying and pasting this material to mm. 1-2 to use as an INTRODUCTION.) Choose Edit --> Copy. Place the playhead at the beginning, and choose Edit --> Copy. You now should have an introduction!
Use what you know about selecting regions, splitting, copying, and pasting to create a brief coda at the end.
THE GOAL, in the end, is to use EDITING features to create an arrangement with this form
